If I Became President.....
70A question was asked by Writerly Yours . What would you do if you were president of the United States? Well, here's my answer. It's probably going to anger some people. Maybe it'll make some laugh. Either way, this is what I would do.
First, I would cut spending. Then I would tell all the department secretaries with the exception of Education, Homeland Security, and Defense to stop all spending. Then I would cut taxes.
The Department of Education would be eliminated. The states should be taking care of education, not the federal government. There's no need to send our money to Washington only to have them send part of it back to the states. Makes no sense. I know. That's an understatement.
The Department of Homeland Security would be disbanded. Their mission has five main areas of responsibility. They are:
1. Guarding against terrorism
3. Enforcing our immigration laws
4. Improving our readiness for, response to and recovery from disasters
5. Maturing and unifying the department
Two, three, and four are a joke right off the bat. This applies not only to the present administration but the last one as well. Lets face it. When it comes to securing our borders,
enforcing our immigration laws, and improving our readiness for, response to and recovery from disasters, our federal government couldn't find it's collective butt with both hands and a map. What makes us think they're going to even try. Number five makes no sense so that only leaves number one that they've successfully managed to do. If I had an employee that could only do one of the five things they were assigned to do after years of employment and flat out refused to do two of them, I'd fire their butt in a New York minute.
All the Czars would be out on their ears. I'm being nice by saying ears. They should've never been there in the first place.
There would be a flat tax for everyone and the IRS would be cut to the bare bones.
The military would be fully funded and given orders to remove the gloves of political correctness, win the war, and come home. Spec Ops and the CIA would be turned loose to find and kill Osama Bin Laden once and for all.
On securing our borders, there
would be two walls built along our southern border, 20 feet high, 50 feet apart, with land mines between them. Snipers would be posted every mile.
All
illegals would have 30 days to get their affairs in order then
go home. You're welcome to return but LEGALLY. At the same time, the process to come in would be streamlined. If you're found here illegally after the 30 days, you'd get 1 year in jail then deported with no option to return legally for at least five years.
Political correctness would be out the window. Sounds simple but just be nice and treat others the way you want to be treated. I realize that sounds a little pie in the sky but if you think about it, it could work.
Since I have to show my son's birth certificate
for him to play on a sports team, all people from this point forward would have to show their birth certificate to become president. Am I a Birther? NOPE!!! It's just seems logical that if I have to do the first,
a presidential candidate should have to do the second.
Again, I realize some will not like this simple approach to running the country. It would need some tweaking along the way. It's broke and it's time to fix it.
I'm Longhunter and I'm running for President of the United States of America. Are you scared yet?

You have my vote!
Looks we are cut from the same cloth, Longhunter; except that my bolt wound up in Memphis.
I think we need to start a "Common Sense" party...Longhunter YOU can be our first candidate for the POTUS....you plain and simple use common sense.
This would never work, it makes way to much sense. If you ran on this platform the voters would be very confused with this concept of having answers to problems. But you would certainly have my vote. Great Hub.
Just be careful about using the word "Change" in your campaign speeches, I think most of us caught on to this one already. Change is not always a good thing.
Excellent hub (and ideas) Longhunter... answered the same question and had the same idea to do a hub about it, but since you beat me to the punch, I'll hold off for a while on that one, lol.
Longhunter, I could not agree more with your comments. One of my favorite hub writers rachellrobinson just did a hub on this very subject. The reason we are in this mess is voter apathy. Many don't even know whom their elected representatives are, let alone communicate with them or look at their voting records. They say what we want to hear, then vote the complete opposite. In her hub, Rachel took the time to identify the ones that voted in favor of a very controversial food bill. It is only by making contact with these elected representatives and letting them know we are not happy with their vote that we can begin turning this around. As long as they believe we are not paying attention or could care less, they will do as they wish and the wishes of the citizens doesn't matter. They would certainly be a little more careful as to how they vote if they knew we were watching. We need a way to remind them that they work for us, and this situation can be easily changed by the voters at the next election. Sorry for the rant, but I for one am fed up with this situation.
Longhunter, thanks for the wise man comment, and I am toying with that very idea. We need a vehicle to get the message out to citizens on how their own representatives voted on some of these controversial issues. We need to let these elected officials on the local, state, and federal level, know exactly how we feel about their performance, or lack of performance. They also need to be told when they are doing a good job, if that ever happens. I will keep you in the loop because until this type action gets started on a mass scale, nothing will ever change. Bottom line, they work for us, we shouldn't ever feel we work for them.
Longhunter, here is a link to Rachel's hub.

More factual hubs like this is something we need badly in this country.

It appears they do all the hard work for us...........
Hubber "Mr. Tindle" wrote a pretty good article about keeping tabs on the goober-mint's hyjinx, had quite a few good sites to check out.
Let me know when you launch your campaign. With policy positions like yours, I would LOVE to support your candidacy!!!!!
In the words of an old military officer, I'll give you two outstandings and a real fine! WB
Good try - but things are not that simple.
You don“t get rid of the 14 Trillion accumulated deficit by just cutting administration costs. 60% of every years budget deficit is literally borrowed from the world through trade deficits. America is no longer commanding itself.
So you may want to be president of the world? Then you can give thoughts on the 20 chinese living in barracks, but sponsoring the life of an average US household with a pool in the backyard.
Beware: This is a short comment from outside the US, not from China.
Longhunter for prez!!
Hey Longhunter, you got my vote!!
I'm in where do we sign up for your campaign! Great hub.
You definitely have my vote.
Well, there goes...
Air Traffic Control, the Space Program, Cancer Research, Aids Research, the Center for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, the ATF, the FBI, possibly the CIA, the Pell Grant (and other fed education programs), the Veterans Administration, Agricultural Protection/Subsidies, Federal Funds for the Interstate Highways.
Overnight we would become the shit-stain of the world. How much spending do you actually imagine is not needed? Medicare, Welfare? I do believe that comes to a total of 28% of the budget, and you leave people without medical care, or the adequate necessities for life. This even includes WIC programs for feeding the next generation.
Change? Yes. This way? No.
I not only would vote for you...I did. Vote you up that is. Flat tax yes. Fund the military yes. Win it and come home - yes. But what is your position on a standing army? I think we need to maintain a sophisticated and fairly large one because when the army is needed, you need to have enough professional soliders to train the new recruits and to achieve success in early critical missions. Keep up the good writing.
I will surely support you!
perfect.
Right on Dude!
I can't believe you wrote all that and not mention the Federal Reserve(private bank), high price of cotton, bartering for food, fire ants and jack@ and elephants acting like turnips....
but if I see your picture on the ballot...
you have my X.
I think your ideas are brilliant! I will vote for you in a heartbeat. Your Hub is well done. Bully for you!
You've got my vote. I wish someone running for president agreed with you all the way down the line.
Need a campaign manager ?? Concise and logical ... What a concept .... Thanks !!!
